Come plant a tree on Ohio State’s campus

Ohio State’s Columbus campus, in part with the help of CFAES’ Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens, has earned Tree Campus USA certification for the past eight years in a row.

One of the certification requirements is a service learning project, and later this week you’re invited to join us and pitch in to help with the project: the ArboBlitz Community Tree Planting from 1–4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, on the south side of the Ohio Union.

It’s free to participate and you don’t need to register.

The trees will be types that are native to Ohio.

Sustaining southeast Ohio’s mighty oaks

CFAES is helping sustain oak forests and the many kinds of life that need them. As a member of the Ohio Interagency Forestry Team, the college’s OSU Extension outreach arm is part of a collective effort to restore oak-dominated forests across 17 counties in southeast Ohio.

Coming up: A day in the (fall) woods

The series called A Day in the Woods continues with “Woodland and Wildlife Research” on Oct. 11.

The event will feature research underway in southeast Ohio’s Vinton Furnace State Forest near McArthur, including on subjects such as blue jays, rattlesnakes, and sustaining oak-hickory forests.

Just as important, the flier says, you can also just “enjoy the fall woods.”

CFAES’ OSU Extension outreach arm is one of the series sponsors.

Spend 2 days in the woods this week

The ongoing A Day in the Woods series, co-sponsored by CFAES’ OSU Extension outreach arm, is hosting two events this week. Timber Harvesting: Things to Consider, Friday, Sept. 13, at the Zaleski State Forest CCC Camp in McArthur, provides details on timber sales, pricing, and meeting financial and environmental goals. The $12 registration fee includes lunch and materials.

The kid-friendly Family Day in the Woods, set for Saturday, Sept. 14, in Vinton Furnace State Forest, also in McArthur, features hands-on activities, a hay ride through the forest, interactive booths, details on local wildlife, and more. Free admission.

A day to do good for your woods

You can learn to do good for your woods on “A Day in the Woods” (say that five times fast).

The next installment in the series—set for Friday, July 12, at Vinton Furnace State Forest—is called “Woodland Stewardship Opportunities.” Woodland improvement, helping oaks, and controlling undesirable species are the topics.

CFAES is one of the series sponsors. The forest is in southeast Ohio near McArthur.
